In case you are interested in some epistolary-ish writings my Friend Martha Grover started an essay series on her blog Somnambulist where writers from different countries write in about life in their respective cities. I’m providing a monthly update about Xi’an and what life in China is like. Martha is writing about Portland and it’s making me nostalgic for the city and also anxious about what I’ll come back to. There is an update from Bangalore that is super fascinating and one from Korea coming soon.

My current update is up now.

The ground was covered in pools of drying blood, a brilliant red color. I forgot the smell of recently butchered animals, how pungent it is, the smell of death and food all at once. I flashed back to my childhood in Alaska and when my parents butchered a moose in my grandparent’s garage.

Check out the first one.
